Interchangeable Launch Tubes?

Post by EtDM »

I'm constructing a 22m similar to the one described on the US Water rockets website here:

http://www.uswaterrockets.com/construct ... torial.htm

and I've been wondering if anyone has developed reliable system for interchanging launch tube, so I can launch rockets of different lengths. I'm building this launcher around 1 liter bottles, but I'd like the option to shoot larger rockets later without constructing an entirely new launcher.

Is this something that anyone has done?

I have. I used a brass Gardena hose quick connect female launcher side, and male on the launch tube side. This allows for quick replacement. I can take pics later if you would like, but I am not home right now. I would use this system in conjunction with a launch rail, as the connection is not necessarily a super sturdy one. It will hold, but the rocket may (will) wobble.

Yes I too tried the connections as above and found the same, they were not overly stable. I change to a screw in version with no guide rail works well.

I will send pics when I can

Thanks, I appreciate the replies here.

I've been considering how to do a screw-in system myself, so I'm definitely interested in seeing your solution.

Hello,

I use the gardena System. For changing the size of the launch tube, I use a technique similar to the first reply post. Using different adapters with a male gardena connector on them, you connect them to the launcher and then just change which gardena head you release to release the correct part of the assembly (the rocket). The 15mm launch tube fits very well into the plastic 15mm release head. Removing it and adding it with brute force has always worked for me. Just use silicon gel to stop the rocket catching on it and pulling it out of the launcher!

Yes I have used the male connector with a launch tube however I would either glue it in or have the end flared so it can't go up with the rocket. The last thing you want is the launch tube falling from a height. Male connectors are not that costly either.

Good hands-on ability.
I come from China, do not understand English, your information I use the translation software to view. I like water rockets, technology is the same, I hope we can become friends.
