2008 1000 foot challenge?

Post by Drag_Racer408a »

Well it is November 5th and i haven't heard anything about anyone breaking 1000 feet. So i am wondering if anyone did and if not will there be a continuation into 2008?

I am sure many of us will be more prepaired next year including myself. Now with the new launcher rules everyone will have an even more level playing field.

An extension for 2008 is under consideration.

We will start a topic in the WRA2 rules forum for discussion about a possible 2008 extension.

Please, please, please, PLEASE extend the deadline!!!! I want to keep trying! I spent a little too much time researching water rockets and had to buckle down and get some other things done. When my plate is clean I will be back in full force! Keep the contest going!!

The Challenge will most likely be extended through 2008. Please join the discussion in the "WRA2 Rules" forum with any suggestions for improvement.

Our rocket had problems with cable tie launchers coming apart under pressure and so we came up with our own superlauncher. It took longer than expected. We are going to build a rocket wound the design starting over Christmas.

Cable ties seem like they would not be very good under high load because they stretch out quite a lot long before they snap. You probably won't break them but they will not hold the rocket securely.

I use a cable tie launcher on some of my rockets and they don't strech. You just have to put like 12-15 on depending on the size of the bottle and put a hose clamp around them tight. Mine have held up very well.

We made a test rig and pulled on them and found that when you reach their rated breaking stress they will stretch out 1-2mm depending on the length of the tie. If you exceed their capacity they stretch even more but we didn't measure that because the initial stretch is a problem for our rocket. We use a DeLaval C/D nozzle and so the o-ring on the launcher must fit in the exact spot in the nozzle it was made for. If you move the rocket up 2mm then the o-ring is in a wider spot of the nozzle and starts to lose pressure. All the water leaks out and we get a flubbed launch.

How does that De Laval nozzel work for you guys. I have seen others like geroge from aircommand try them but his really didn't wor the best because of the pressures he was launching at.

But if your launching at higher pressures then they might actuallw work.

Now i can see why you don't like the ties. My nozzle has a little more surface area on the o-ring so it can move a little.

The jury is still out on CD nozzles for me. I don't see how they can work with water because you can't compress it. The air burst may be the only period of thrust where it makes any difference and that's so short it may not really make any difference. Perhaps a test rig could measure this because a properly made CD nozzle provides something on the order of 5 times the thrust as a plain nozzle. 5x the air burst thrust may be worth looking at. I wonder if you could test it by launching air only rockets with different nozzles and no launch tube and compare the max altitude. It seems like that would be a good test.
