Old Timer

It's so nice to see how far water rocketry has come in the last
15 years. I have been out of the sport for so long now that
Cliff Heath, Bruce Berrgren, Dean Wheeler , and some of the other
old timers just seem to have moved on. In their place , I see some
real talent. I can see that it will take me a while to get back up to
speed what with all of the posts and technology here on the
Water Rocket Forum.

Welcome to the forum, Bob! Technology has really changed the hobby over the past few years. They have decent cameras that can take video from a rocket that are under $15 bucks and weigh under 20 grams. I think that being able to fly cameras easily and cheaply has really gotten tons of people interested.

How far back are you talking about when you were active? One thing that we have been trying to uncover is the pressure capacity of those old style PET bottles with the separate plastic base and no "feet". Were you launching those types of bottles back in the day?

Of course we don't know what we don't know, so any information you have to share about anything would be very cool.

That is old time ,now. I remember using them at 100psi only.
I do not have any rupture strength data on the old style
2 liter bottles.

That is old time ,now. I remember using them at 100psi only.
I do not have any rupture strength data on the old style
2 liter bottles.

It's a shame nobody recorded that info. Those bottles were quite a bit heavier and we think that would make them stronger. Then again, the plastic may not have been as well made back then so they may have needed to be thicker to hold the same pressure.

From one old timer to another. I got started back in 1997. Been that long ago already. Needed a hands on science project for high school students. Couldn't buy a launcher, so I made one. I couldn't get the Clark Cable Tie launcher to work and it was too difficult to make, so I started working on end-seal launch pads. Now I use the internal o-ring but I found the secret to making it work, use a bottle reamer. So I make bottle reamers for my launch pads.

I still don't have a low cost, 100%, parachute deployment mechanism. I hope someday to build a better one. That is another subject.

Got connected with scouts and I've been providing launch pads ever since. I think I've sold over 400 launch pads of various designs over the years.

I keep adding content to my website and youtube channel.
