Recovery systems are always a good place to start. Tomy timer recovery systems are simple and effective. You'll need a recovery system before building more complex rockets.

That's right!

A lot of people use them as a delay timer to deploy a parachute.

Of course if you are more ambitious you could look at the deploy systems that people use right now and invent your own form of recovery. The ability to reliably deploy a parachute with a lightweight system is really something that many people would be interested in seeing.
