Super Glue

Post by Spaceman Spiff »

I just read a little article about super glue and learned something cool. Did you guys know that it hardens when exposed to water? I always thought it hardened when heated and I did dumb stuff like used a hair dryer on it. I bet I made it worse. Worse yet, I clean everything I glue with alchohol, which would also dry it out. They say to moisten things with water before using super glue on them. That's a great tip I thought I would share with my fellow builders!

Hmmm. Good tip! Thanks for spreading the word! I think PL Premium works with moisture as well, so the same tip probably applies!

I know that PL isn't suposed to be in to dry of conditions. Thats why your suposed to not dry it under a light.

They suggest you boil water or set up a humidifier if you live in dry conditions. It puts water molecules in the air and that's what makes the PL solidify. They say it doesn't take much.

That must be why it gets all hard in the tube, even when capped tightly!

I don't understand why everyone has issues with there PL drying out. I have ready it all over the net on different sites. I just take some duck tape and wrap it around the end once and it stays fine.

Is the air where you live humid or not? If there's less moisture in the air then the PL probably lasts longer?

Is it "PL Premuim" in the yellow and red caulk gun tube?

Hey you guys. A guy I work with suggested putting some dessicant into the nozzle of the PL before capping it off will prevent the water vapor from making the glue harden.

Dessicent is that stuff that comes in the little packets that look like sugar packs that says "Do Not Eat" on them. You can find them in the bottom of boxes that TVs and other electronic products come in. It keeps the products from getting damaged by water when they ship them on boats.
