Rocket Names

Post by Blenderite »

I have never been able to come up with good names for my water rockets. The last name I came up with that sounded cool to me turned out to be the name of a city in Ohio...didn't feel like getting sued for naming my rocket after a town without getting their permission.

How do you guys create names for your rockets?

What inspires you? Do you want to have a common theme?

Don't Worry about copyrights when naming your rockets unless you plan to sell them. Even then, the products would have to be similar and easily confused.

Just add water
Calgon
Laissez Le Bon Temps Volent
Go Fetch
Traveling Sprinkler

My theme is crazy fun

Hello Blenderite,
I agree to Bugwubber.

Our rocket fleet consists of two main series, called "Swallow" and "SkyHopser".
The Swallow-Rockets are the bigger ones, and are named after the bird.
The SkyHopser-Rockets are smaller ones for testing new technologies.
The name consists of Sky (which should be clear), and a word from a German dialect which means "Jumper".
We found this name quite funny at the beginning, but we got used to it.
Our parachute system is called "Phenix" because the ejection of the red parachute remembers us on this (fable) bird.

A good name can (not must) contain:
Properties of the rocket, something you hope for (for example we called one of our first rockets "Explorer" because we wanted to explore the hobby) or just terms of science and the universe.
These are just a few examples, I hope it may help you.

Cheers
Julian

Thanks for explaining ""SkyHopser". We were about ready to look it up in google because nobody knew what it might mean.

Hello Blenderite,

I name my rockets after the Rainbow Codes used by the British Government to code name various British military research projects. Each rainbow code name was constructed from a randomly selected colour, plus an (often appropriate) noun taken from a list, for example:

Black Arrow
Blue Streak
etc

These were test rockets build in the 1960/70's. I named my first series of rockets 'Blue Diamond' carrying on the tradition!

Haha I tested it, and the result was "Brave Swallow".
Well, that's pretty close to our current rocket series ;)

I would recommend you to choose something more fitting.
Heavy is not a good property of a water rocket, isn't it?
Personally, I prefer rocket names which consists of only one word.

Partly why I named my sleekest new payload module Acrophobia.

I name my rockets by choosing a sciencey word then adding a suffix -on or -ra.

Hyperion- Saturn's moon
Nanon- this rocket is tiny- only 300ml!
Micron- 350ml
Macron- not so tiny- 500 ml
Positron/Electra- Matter/Antimatter (2-stage)
Aquon- designed to be waterproof (I failed on making it one)]
Vega- I decided this name for my boosters while writing this
Straton- Named after the high altitude cloud layer
