Who knows an easy way to get the label glue off a bottle?

Post by Tim Chen »

I had been having good luck with mineral spirits but I think they changed the formula and now I am having trouble.

Any suggestions?

I use paint thinner. Works very well. I also find that if you put some pressure in the bottle you can push harder and it really helps. When I heat shrink bottles the heat also really helps. You could try putting about 30 psi in the bottle and passing a heat gun over the glue quickly if you are having trouble, but there is a good chance of deformation. Good luck with whatever you try.

Forgot to add: it comes off twice as quickly if you fill the bottle with warm water and cap it first.

mineral turpentine works best for me. Then wash this off with soap and water.

Peel off as much of the paper or plastic printed label part as you can get off easily, then wrap the bottle with a paper towel and spray it with WD-40. Come back a couple hours later and wipe off the glue. Works like a charm.

oh yea, dont forget lighter fluid, that works great too :)

basically, anything from Turpentine to mineral spirits, but try to avoid paint thinner as that's way too strong and may alter the plastic's properties.. :|

i personally use mineral spirits as that's cheap and safe for the plastic :)

That's a good point. Don't use Acetone, either. That will weaken the bottles.

I fill the bottle with hot water from the tap. Wait a few seconds then split the label with a knife opposite the joint and slowly pull the label off holding both ends at the same time. Works Great. Papa WRockit

I prefer to use an orange oil based adhesive remover. I try to stay away from most petroleum based chemicals if at all possible. If the adhesive forces us to use harsh chemicals, we use "Goof Off". In either case we immediately clean the bottle in soap and water.

We've found a product that sounds similar to this the appears to be citrus and pine based. It's called "Goo Gone" and in testing it works exceptionally well. The only possible impediment to this method is that plastic label material has to be completely stripped off and only the glue remains on the bottle. The plastic will prevent the remover from soaking into the glue. Papa WRockit's technique could be the answer to this step.

Is this the first ref to the hot water procedure?

Anyway, looks like this process made it to print in this months handyman mag...
