Basalt fiber

Post by RaZias »

I read in the wikipedia that Basalt Fiber is stronger than fiber glass and more cheaper than carbon fiber.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basalt_fiber

What is better Kevlar, Aramid, Spectra or Basalt Fiber ?

(anyway I know that Spectra is stronger and lighter than Kevlar)

I think I have gotten a pretty good sample of this for free from one of my contacts. If I'm lucky I might even score a continuous supply of "remnants" from them too. I hope to get some testing done before spring. I will let you guys know how I do. Maybe I'll have enough to share! Cross your fingers!

That's great for you if you can score a supply of fiber for free, no matter what kind it is. You can always find uses for it or just use it for practicing your construction techniques. If you ever get tired of it you can send it our way!

There is also "quartz fiber" and "silicon fiber", but basalt fiber is way stronger than those.

If you made a rocket from quartz fiber, would it be transparent and fireproof?
