Google Introduces Gmail 2.0

Do the folks at Google ever sleep? We thought (hoped?) they were hard at work on the Gphone, but now this article at Google Blogoscoped and this one at Google Operating System tell us they've actually been implementing some major changes to their popular and powerful Web-based e-mail app, Gmail. And, in fact, the version is already being rolled out to some users.

The new version has reportedly received a significant behind-the-scenes JavaScript rewrite, so it runs a lot faster, and has improved contact management that will let you store more detailed information about the people with whom you regularly communicate. Integration with Picasa Web Albums also simplifies the process of adding photos to your contacts. In addition to some new keyboard shortcuts, you can also bookmark different Gmail views, making it even more convenient to the sections you want. It certainly seems like Google is laying the groundwork for even more exciting features down the road. (For more insights about what might lie ahead, check out this post at the Official Google Blog.)

Some Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 users are already receiving the 2.0 update. More users of those browsers will receive it in the coming weeks, with updates for other browsers to follow later.
