You just eliminated the simplest systems for staging. Anything else is way more complex. You could probably cheat and not use a serial stager at all. A parallel stager would technically qualify. Just make some hooks on the side and attach parallel boosters with a larger nozzle diameter so they fall off while the core is still under thrust.
