The connector is supposed to plug into a radio control receiver to power the altimeter. It can be used without areceiver, but you must do some work. The red lead is +, the black lead is -. Connect those leads to any battery of 3.2v or above, for instance a 9v PP9. You will have to make a new lead and splice it to the existing lead.

I'm a relative noob, too. I just made my first altimeter purchase from Apogee, but have yet to fly it. Seems awesome...tiny and light weight. Charges by USB. Here's the link. http://www.apogeerockets.com/AltimeterOne.asp

When we started our work in water rockets 7 years ago, there were no altimeters like this. These look really durable and rugged and are much less expensive than the designs available at that time. We wrecked a number of expensive altimeters, so you're lucky to have found this. It sadly lacks a way to log flight data, but the peak reading is enough information to assist you in developing higher performing rockets. Once you have some experience, you may want to switch to a logging altimeter and get flight curves.

Yes, this ready-made device by Apogee is a real blessing. Since I'm not going for any records, but am sincerely interested in my rocket's altitude performance, this is the perfect device for me at this time.

Being a noob, I expect to crash and/or lose a few of my early rockets, so having a rugged, inexpensive altimeter was the primary driving force for the selection of this particular piece of equipment. Hope to fly it VERY soon. Just need a week-end day with minimal wind...hard to come by on Long Island, New York in the fall!

Best,

Frank
