i launched my acceleration deployed tomy timer recovery system with a -G water experimental module payload to test recovery systems. it was very windy and my results were mixed up. ill post results soon. here's the video

heres a video of a modifide version of my acceleration deployed recovery module which deployed but the parachute failed to open resulting in a crash destorying the tomy timer beyond repare this time. some good camera angels though.

this has sort of convinced me to continue with my side force deployed recovery system which has been lying on my desk for few months. the tomy timer recovery module was ment to protect the rocket if the experimental recovery system failed.

i thought id just post another crash of my recovery system, i think the door came off during flight. i know the system works just it need to be built a bit stronger.

i use a R/c parachute deployment system.

got a inexpensive 2.4ghz set from this site:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/stor ... aff=109055

it comes with a nice receiver:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/stor ... aff=109055

which i used to control the micro servo to operate the side deploy parachute hatch.

the styrofoam nose cone has since been destroyed in a crash, the parachute got tangled (need to pack properly)

it's not the lightest system, i just managed to get my hands on a digital scale.

the complete recovery module, taped to a 1.5l bottle + tornado coupling is 300grams

this is designed for my 7 liters and larger WRockets.. (i think it's too heavy to go smaller)

i test launched this setup several times,
1st flight, 1,5l WRocket, great success
2nd flight, 1,5l Wrocket, tangled, CRASH
3rd flight, 7l WRocket, chute did not deploy, CRASH (causes not known, but servo motor worked. could be rubber band tangle)
4th flight, 4,4l WRocket, great success, good flight time
5th flight, 4,4l Wrocket, almost crash, chute opened 2m off the ground! (the Wrocket tangled with the chute)

here's my latest video. The 3rd launch the parachute deployed too late and it broke, damage not too bad (because i put some PVC next to the tomy timer to protect it). i tested a backgliding rocket but it crashed. i added some music to this one.

the weight pulls down a locking pin that releases the tomy timer which releases the door after 3 seconds pushing the parachute out.

The R/C deploy and the acceleration deploy systems you guys are cooking up look very promising. As with any new idea there's refining work left to be done, but your successes prove the concepts. The minor details are all that are left. One thing you might consider would be using a parachute bag to prevent tangles of the parachute until it is fully deployed.

Nice work you guys!

hi,
thanks!
i'm actually back tracking some and built some tommy timers recovery modules! in an effort to save weight :(
also there is the very real possibility of when once the WRocket goes higher than visual range, i may not be able to judge if it's apogee.. or not :D

ah well :P
