Depends what you want to do. If you aren't going to compete, the How High altimeter from http://www.wingedshadow.com/ is a great alternative. Super light, cheap, and durable.

Yes, the How High was the first altimeter I had. I was very pleased with it, but I had to get a logging altimeter because I'm now trying to break the class B record. So I now have the perfectflite alt 15k as well, and I'm also really happy with it. I'd say if you just want a pretty good idea of how high your rockets are going, then get the How High. If you think you will compete in the Class A or B, or if you want to use your altimeter as a tool to analyze your flights, then get a logging one. I did a bit of looking around, and the alt 15k seems to be the cheapest, but still better than many of the other logging altimeters.

You could get a Altimeter Microsenser V3 for $30 in the USA. Go to http://www.eagletreesystems.com

I looked at those when they first came out and I couldn't find any specs for the number of measurements per second this thing does. It looks like it's made for R/C planes and so a high measurement rate is probably not needed. I'm not sure it would be fast enough.
