Water Rockets Launch Day 6 2.7.11

Post by jerm »

Hi,

This was a mixed day with a crash and a successful flight following the crash. There were a lot of issues due to the low G lunches with the timer not starting. The Paratrooper worked well and we were very happy with the results.

I see the paratrooper survived!
Are you using an Acceleration deployed timer recovery system?

Hi Brian,

The Tommy Timer starter is copper tubing and wire, this simply drops away on takeoff, this failed to drop off at launch coursing the issue.

My analysis was a low G takeoff. This rocket is a much bigger rocket than I normally fly and I only used a 9mm nozzle. I didn’t run any simulations and this may have picked up this issue, I was too keen to get the paratrooper of the ground.

To resolve this issue I can change the design of the starter or just tie the starter to the ground or launcher.

My recovery systems starter is a pvc and glue weight with a metal sowing pin as the locking pin. This pin has little friction and makes make the recovery system very sensitive. Reducing resistance on the pin will help too.
How does your starter jam the timer till launch?

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the suggestion, reducing the friction will help and I will take-up your suggestion. I also like the use of a pin.

Thanks for the advice.

In addition to what Brian suggested, you can always make a litle 6" parachute and tie it to your Tomy Timer starter. That way you never forget to tie it off to the launcher and the drag of the little chute insures that it will pull out every time.

Here is a quick video of the pin starter I use. I have tried a few other starters but this one has worked best so far. The pin is just tied onto the launcher base. Simples.

Thanks for the video, I think I need more time in the workshop to sort out some bugs in this rocket.

Thanks!
