Sysonby team best

Post by 160psi »

Just got our altimeter - an alt15k. First trial on Sunday with "Old Faithful II" as follows:

- Rocket volume 1300ml
- water volume 400ml
- nozzle 17mm
- weight 225g approx
- pressure 200psi
- recovery horizontal descent (not as stable as usual due to weight of altimeter)
- apogee 454 feet or 138m

attached is altimeter trace

Isn't it cool how the spinning parachute can make the curve so bumpy on the way down? It amazes me that the sensor is that precise.

We've seen that type of "bumpy" descent when using a really stretchy shock cord. The springy cord allows the rocket to bounce a lot. It makes for cruddy video of the descent too.

Actually that rocket is a backslider and noremally comes down perfectly horizontally, but the small weight of the altimeter unbalanced it slightly and it tumbled quite badly, almost becoming a lawn dart.

It does make you realise how narrow the scope for error is with backsliders, and how it is best to launch with an equivalent weight "dummy" camera and altimeter before using the expensive stuff!
