In the snow!!!

Post by bugwubber »

My battery was not convinced it should be making electricty at this temp, and my mini compressor didn't think I was serious. The valve stem had a bit of an ice jam at first. I had to take the launcher inside to warm up and blow out the ice blockage.

I then sprayed down the launch tube and valve stem with wd-40.

Loading the launcher upside down helped keep the lauch tube clear.

Very cool! I love how there is a brief trail of snow when the rocket launches. I wounded how the rocket would perform with a reduced nozzle? I'm very surprised that the snow did not melt from pressurization. Great work!

I don't own any plastic garden hose connectors- just brass and aluminum, otherwise I'd try.

I wonderd about the pressure as well but I only went to 60psi and it is flippin cold; 40 deg F below the freezing point of water. Think it'd take much more to cause phase change.

Will have to get out to the field and try this properly.

Oh almost forgot the science: I filled the bottle almost completely full of snow and it still felt light. All of the snow was expelled.

Thanks,

Interesting frame grab from the video. Looks like snow rings.

Howdy :-)

Hope you liked.. well wait we're talking about the snow rocket video right? LOL

My son has discovered my Calvin and Hobbes collection and has recently been running around the house pretending to be Spaceman Spiff.

Here's the video in slow motion with a few freeze frames at the end.

How much pressure was there? And I see that some people connect their bottles through the bottom. How do I do that. It has snowed recently here so I will have to wait to launch my new rocket with the servo chron. When I do I will try to post the on board video.

This is actually a single bottle rocket. Just a bottle cap glued on to the top of the bottom bottle.
60 psi for testing in the yard.

Why is there another bottle glued on. Does this have a deploy system in it?

Top bottle- holds ballast water
(friction fit, held in place by the fairing)
Middle bottle- cargo bay (camera, altimeter)
(screwed into a bottle cap which is glued to the)
Bottom bottle- pressure vessel

If a crash damages the top bottle or bottom bottle, it is easily replaceable.

That's a good way to take car of all the potential problems with a water rocket. You have ballast for stability, a crush zone to protect the electronics, and a module section design that allows damaged parts to be quickly replaced. That's a textbook example of efficiency.
