Hello from UK

Post by The Sky Dart »

Hi All,

We are a small family team with a modest goal of getting over 300 meters on air and water. We are based in Surrey, UK and you can see our yet modest achievements on the team site: http://sites.google.com/site/theskydartteam/

Best regards to all member.
Cheers,
The Sky Dart

Nice to see another UK water rocketeer. Welcome to the forum. In your test video that looks like an FTC-style rocket body, is that right?
Cheers

Thank you very much Steve.

What is the FTC-style?

I have not got time to update our webpage yet. I hope this week I'll put all pictures and it'll be clear how it's done. At the moment the rocket is just a pressure vessel without a nose cone, fins and a payload section. It's made of a 40mm polypropylene pipe I bought in B&Q for about two quid. The rest is gust a gantry to keep it straight up and stop the rocket from flying into neighbours garden starting a local war. The pipe is manufactured by Marley (http://www.marleyplumbinganddrainage.co ... ylene.html)
Cheers,

FTC = Fluorescent Tube Cover = a transparent cylinder made from polycarbonate that is designed to cover a lighting tube to prevent contamination in case of breakage, and which is abused by water rocketeers to make long thin rocket bodies.

OK, be careful with PP as it is hard to glue (usually waste pipes are a loose push fit). I tend to use cold water supply pipe rather than waste pipe as it has a known pressure rating and there are solvent glues and glue-free pressure safe push fit systems available.

Good luck with your project and keep us updated with the results of your experiments.
Cheers

Hello Sky Dart!

Welcome to this forum! I would love to know if you have flown the skinny rocket yet because like Steve says that PP is reall hard to glue. I wonder how much pressure it would hold too.

I made fins once from a PP food container and the only way I found to attach them was to use a soldering pencil and melt the plastic together.

Thank you Andromeda,

I use thermo glue for glue guns. The technique is a bit awkward, but proved to be reliable enough.
We've repeatedly reached 300psi on the same pressure vessel.
Cheers,
