Safety Shield

Post by NautilusRockets »

New safety shield for launching and pressure testing smaller rockets. It is made from 1.5” thick bulletproof lexan. Each side panel is 16”x30” with a bottom plate of 14.5”x14.5”. It will have a lower and upper frame that will allow the back front plate to slide to the side. The back plate has a hole for the hose. The top will have a removable safety screen for pressure testing. It is designed to come apart for transport as each side panel weighs almost 30 pounds.

I also picked up 1.75” and 2” thick lexan for a larger unit. I still need to clean all the adhesive residue off the panels. They are crystal clear allowing for cameras to be placed up close. I immediately tested the bullet resistance on a piece of 1.5” using a 9mm and it came out fine.

Tested a piece of the 1.5" (38mm) bullet resistant lexan with 9mm 1450fps ammo at under 2 meters distance. Penetration (left to right) is 12.62mm, 11.46mm, and 9.71mm. Nothing came off on the back.

It would be interesting to see what happens if you fire bullets at each side. I've seen some materials absorb a bullet when shot from one side, but the material spalls when shot from the other side.

I fired 12 rounds into a 16"x16"x2" and nothing came close to going through. The deepest was a 4 or 5 round cluster that got about an inch into it. Next time I test a piece I will try that. I have been rather frugal with stuff. It is rather expensive and got a good deal on my supply. We drove 16 hours round trip to pick it up. I posted video of the testing of the 2" on our Youtube channel.
